In the heart of South Miami, The Fresh Market recently opened its newest area store, bringing the brand's signature approach to fresh food and neighborhood hospitality to one of the region's most vibrant urban corridors. Cuhaci Peterson led architecture and structural design for the project, with Erdman Anthony serving as MEPR consultants, delivering a 26,978-square-foot store that anchors the ground floor of a new mixed-use development at 5880 SW 73rd Street.

The store is part of a true urban, ground-up development, with structured parking and residential units rising above the grocery space below. CP came on board in mid-2021 and moved into active design at the end of 2022, guiding the project through the layered planning that a vertical, mixed-use format demands, from utility coordination to the choreography of a grocery store operating beneath residential construction. That collaborative groundwork paid off: The Fresh Market celebrated its grand opening on January 28, 2026, welcoming the South Miami community into a bright, thoughtfully designed store.

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS

  • A signature copper canopy crowns the center deli department, a striking focal point that reflects The Fresh Market’s current store prototype and gives the department a warm, artisanal presence.
  • With the sales floor tucked beneath the development’s concrete parking deck, the design team embraced an open, unpainted structural ceiling rather than the brand’s more traditional finished deck. The result is a naturally lit, airy space with an industrial-chic character that resonates with South Miami’s design-forward atmosphere.
  • Collaborating with the developer’s shell team, CP’s design and engineering group coordinated closely on the building systems threaded through the space overhead, from fire protection to drainage, ensuring a seamless, code-compliant integration between tenant fit-out and base building.
  • Building on lessons from this flagship, CP has already developed a refreshed center deli concept for future Fresh Market stores, featuring a black powder-coated frame and suspended wire mesh screen paired with a layered ceiling grid and tile pattern, evolving the brand’s look for the next generation of stores.

A MODEL FOR URBAN GROCERY DESIGN

The Fresh Market South Miami showcases what’s possible when a grocery fit out is woven into a larger urban fabric of parking and residential living. Through close collaboration among CP, Erdman Anthony, the developer’s shell team and The Fresh Market, the project turned a complex vertical development into a welcoming neighborhood destination that blends natural light, artisanal design touches and everyday convenience for the South Miami community. It stands as a strong example of CP’s continued partnership with The Fresh Market, a relationship spanning more than 50 stores since 2011, and of the firm’s ability to deliver quality grocery design within even the most intricate urban settings.
