“There are a tremendous number of types of projects that either the developers get involved with, or Publix the brand get involved with directly and we are excited to say we’ve been involved in all of them.”

Greg Simpson, Chief Executive Officer

“We provide that expertise in the site development process. That’s something that Publix prides themselves on. It’s almost like a bible for Publix. Over time our team has become experts on that.”

The Challenge

As Publix has gotten larger, the neighborhood stores that they were once building are not the same ones that they are building today. Publix is in urban areas, they have a GreenWise program, and are engaged in a large-scale remodeling effort across their whole ecosystem. In short, there are a tremendous number of types of projects that Publix is a part of, and we are proud to say we have been involved in all of them.

To highlight just one, the O-Town West development in Southwest Orange County, Florida is a $1 billion mixed-use community that covers 350 acres and consists of four commercial districts: The City Center, The Village, The Crossings, and the Town Center. The developer of the property, Unicorp National Developments, needed an anchor tenant for their Town Center befitting the upscale market and that’s when they turned to Cuhaci Peterson to be the architect for a destination Publix shopping center.

Other Multiformat Solutions

One of the things that makes Cuhaci Peterson unique is our ability to work with the developer on the exterior and directly with Publix on the interior. Our synergistic approach streamlines the site-development process and saves time and money for both the developer and Publix. From remodels to permitting submittal and construction administration, CP offers a comprehensive suite of services to realize your vision and accomplish your goals. In fact, we are frequently asked to do the adjacent retail also, because of our end-to-end services.

This includes ground-up shopping centers with adjacent retail, teardowns of existing anchors, and urban settings with parking garages or multifamily residential. Whatever the project calls for, our team has the expertise to deliver the multi-format solution that is required. The O-Town West Publix, covering an area of 48,387 square feet, features a captivating front façade characterized by sleek, modern design elements. The asymmetrical lines and the incorporation of green-glowing LED light bars add a touch of contemporary flair, making it a standout addition to the development.

CP worked with Publix to meet their requirements and get them to a place where they felt comfortable so the project could move forward, and our client could realize their aesthetic vision. A win-win for Publix and the developer not to mention customers, because the in-store shopping experience is as good as the building looks! The store which opened December 8, 2022, features contactless payment, and includes a full compliment of all of the departments that make shopping a pleasure: floral, meats and cheeses, produce, bakery, deli, and seafood.

The Relationship

Cuhaci Peterson has had the pleasure of working on more than 460 Publix shopping centers in states such as Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. We are proud to say we have been working with Publix for more than 30 years now and have experience completing all of the various formats they have to offer.
