The roads of Pennsauken, New Jersey, were filled with determination, teamwork and plenty of miles on Saturday, Sept. 12, as riders and volunteers came together for the annual Foster100 charity ride.
Among them was Melissa Paulus, who achieved an incredible milestone by completing her first-ever century ride, cycling an impressive 104 miles. What makes the accomplishment even more remarkable is that Melissa is relatively new to cycling, having started training earlier this year. With dedication, persistence and countless hours of preparation, she set her sights on the 100-mile mark and powered her way across the finish line.
And she did it without clip-in cycling shoes.
While many long-distance cyclists rely on specialized shoes that attach to their pedals for greater efficiency and support, Melissa completed all 104 miles wearing regular athletic shoes, adding another layer of difficulty to an already demanding challenge.
As if finishing a century ride wasn’t enough, Melissa received a special honor at the end of the event. Traditionally, the U.S. flag is carried across the finish line by a veteran. Although her riding platoon did not include a veteran this year, organizers selected Melissa to carry the flag in recognition of her perseverance, determination and commitment to reaching her goal.
“When they handed me the flag, it was an emotional moment,” Melissa said. “I was already proud to have completed my first century ride, but knowing what this event stands for and the impact it has on veterans made it even more meaningful. Carrying the flag across the finish line was an honor I’ll never forget.”
The Foster100 ride raises funds to support the training of service dogs that are paired with veterans living with PTSD, helping provide life-changing companionship and support. Every mile ridden and every volunteer hour contributed helps advance this meaningful mission.
Reflecting on her experience, Melissa hopes her accomplishment encourages others to take on challenges that may seem out of reach.
“My biggest piece of advice is not to let your own doubts hold you back.”

A year ago, she never would have imagined herself riding 104 miles. Her advice is to start small, stay consistent and trust your training. “You’ll be surprised by what you’re capable of accomplishing,” she said.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all the Foster100 riders and rest stop volunteers who made the event such a success. We are especially proud of Melissa for taking on this challenge and proving that grit, determination and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone can take you farther than you ever imagined. The entire CP team represented the firm exceptionally well, and we look forward to cheering on next year’s riders.
