Another Tour de Cure at Lake Nona has come and gone, but not without breaking some notable records. In addition to the Orlando American Diabetes Association blowing through their 2017 fundraising goal of $650,000 ($738,914 raised to date), 170 of the 1266 participants in this year’s ride were Champions (individual raising $1,000+).
The Cuhaci & Peterson/LassiterWare team was there in full force, riding over 1300 miles in support of finding a cure for diabetes. Our team of 34 has raised just over $31,000 (team record!) so far, putting us in 2nd place for corporate teams. However, fundraising continues until April 26th so there’s still time to donate.
Ride day began early, just after 6:00 am for many, with the hustle and bustle of volunteers and riders alike. By the 7:30 am start time, there was an enthusiastic crowd gathered at the starting line to send off the riders. As the morning wore on festivities got lively at Lake Nona Town Center and before too long, audible cheers were erupting every few minutes as riders started to cross the finish line. An aura of accomplishment emanated from both the riders and the volunteers throughout the day.
While celebrating our returning riders, Champion and C&P President Jed Downs remarked that he enjoyed having team sponsor, Jeremiah’s Italian Ice on hand for sweet treats. One of those riders was the daughter of Amin Fikry, whom the team rides in memory of. She successfully completed a 25-mile ride and we were honored to have her and her mother at the event with us.
Retired C&P Co-Founder and one of our team’s 8 Champions, Lonnie Peterson, had this to say about his 50-mile ride, “It was a great day, and I was in better shape this year than last . . . probably should have upped my mileage to 65. No matter which direction we were going it felt like the wind was at our back! So, like the pros, I passed everyone I could on the last hill and sprinted to the finish. It was a great day for an awesome cause. Proud to be a part!”
The event was full of people who, regardless of which team you were with, were there to support each other for a common goal. All-day long, until the last rider crossed the finish line there were people there to cheer on and recognize the incredible accomplishments of each rider, a sentiment echoed by C&P/LassiterWare Team Captain and Champion, Chris Abbey the day before the ride, when he said, “I’m excited, amazed, and in awe at all the support and hard work that has gone into this year’s event and grateful to be a part of something so incredible.”
Congratulations again to everyone who participated and many thanks to those that donated and sponsored our team this year! Additionally, special recognition goes out to LassiterWare for partnering with us for the 2nd year and to our team Champions who set the fundraising bar high and helped us surpass our goal!
Together we’ll find cure!
